With little time to save Ramonıs life, the team struggles to understand his reasoning and seemingly extreme religious convictions, but eventually learn that faith is not an argument. Meanwhile, Taub questions his wife Rachel about her relationship with an infidelity support group member and the team attends a co-workerıs wedding where Wilsonıs relationship with Sam (guest star Watros) takes an unexpected turn in the all-new "Small Sacrifices" episode of HOUSE airing Monday, Nov. 22 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HOU-708) (TV-14 D, L)
Timeline
Cuddy is still mad that House lied to her and House is still trying to deal with that without apologizing so this is very near the last couple of episodes.
Patient of the Week
Ramon made a pact with God some years ago that if he cured his daughter of cancer, he would have himself nailed to a cross every year. This year he starts to cough up blood.
How House gets involved:
The privacy invasion / ethical breach / Rule Breaking
Lies every where on every level of human interaction but the main ethical breach was lying to the patient about his daughter's cancer.
Preliminary diagnoses:
Taub suggests Rhodococcus equi but that doesn't fit later symptoms. Then heavy metal poisoning and malnourishment. Then back to Rhodococcus
The final diagnosis
Malnutrition, Rhodococcus, and Marburg's Multiple Sclerosis
Who Came up with final diagnosis
Chase came up with the malnutrition while searching the patient's apartment. Foreman came up with the pseudobulbar affect when the patient smiled when he was hurt. The MRI showed multiple sclerosis but House came up with the variant that is so much worse called Marburg's.
Clinic Patients
None

Quotes, Quotations, Dialogue, Scenes:
  • Cuddy is still mad at House for lying to her in the previous story. "I'm not apologizing for doing the right thing."
"Lying to me was not the right thing---"
"I lied to save my patient's life. I didn't lie to you, I lied to my boss." House watches Cuddy's face for a moment. "Either of those arguments working yet?" The arguments do not seem to be working. And on top of that Cuddy insists that he go to the wedding of the chairman of the board. "I loath weddings and their seven levels of hypocracy. But you do seem awfully hissy and there's an outside chance I could get you drunk and score so as long as you don't take it as an admission of guilt, sure count me in." Then seeing Cuddy's expression he adds, "A bit too much honesty?"

  • The patient is a man who thinks he has made a pact with God to save his daughter's life. House makes fun of him and the daughter asks him, "You don't believe in God?"
"...Causal determinence. We are hard wired to need answers... The problem is when we don't find a logical answer, we settle for a stupid one. Ritual is what happens when we run out of the rational."

  • Cuddy notices that House is dressed differently. "Why are you wearing that?"
       "It's my dressy casual."
"You look like Wilson. It looks weird." Cuddy notices that House seems a little disappointed. "Well, you knew I'd think that which makes me wonder why you look disappointed."
"If you prick me, do I not bleed."
"You knew I wouldn't like it, but you thought I would say I did. That's what this is about. You're trying to trip me into lying to you."
"You sure? 'Cause that sounds so juvenile."

  • House goes to Wilson for a second opinion on whether the daughter really was cured of a cancer that would normally have killed her. Wilson offers no explanation and House complains, "So either God intervened which is a lazy explanation or we just don't know which is no explanation."
"Sometimes there is no explanation. And I'm just find with that."
       "Which annoys me no end"

  • The patient refuses the one treatment that has a chance to save him: embryonic stem cells. Later Masters has a private conversation with him and he tells her, "I didn't tell you the truth. I lied when I told you I'm not afraid to die."
"But you're going straight to heaven, so...."
       "That's what I believe. But I'm human."
"So, you know you may be wrong...."
"That's why we have beliefs so we can still know the right thing to do even when we're blinded with doubt and fear. Our beliefs define us. If we lose them, who are we."

  • House is still arguing with his patient even after he tricks him. "Punishment is proof of God. And no punishment is proof of God. Ingenious argument"
       "Faith isn't an argument."

  • This shows House how he can phrase his argument to Cuddy and he tells her, "I've been an idiot. I get this argument stuck in my head: If everybody lies then trust is not only unfounded and pointless, its fictional. But trust is not an argument to be one or lost. Maybe I just have to suspend my cynicism and belief. Maybe its time I take a leap of faith. I'm sorry. I won't lie to you again."

  • Wilson lost his ex-wife when he proposed to her. By being too honest. Later House tells Wilson about his conversation with Cuddy, "I apologized to her."
       "Good for you."
"Not really. I lied. I just took your advise. Too bad you didn't."
